Meet Axel Fourie, an african who has made a fortune off fixing i-phones

Meet Axel Fourie, an african who has made a fortune off fixing i-phones

Axel Fourie could be what most people call an accidental entrepreneur. He had tried a lot of other businesses in the past but never had luck with any. But he saw a great business opportunity by luck and made the best of it.
We are not going to beat about the bush and talk about where he grew up, or his past failed ventures or stuff like that, we will just go straight to the point and tell you about the period this guy had his epiphany as an entrepreneur.
This young South African had a problem with his IPod when he was 27. He went on YouTube to find a solution to it, and by this time YouTube was still growing to get the reputation it now has today. After he successfully fixed it, he thought of how he could turn this opportunity into a revenue stream.
He then thought of placing an advert in a local newspaper offering to fix Ipads and Ipods. He knew this was going to be a big business opportunity after two people called him after placing the ads. The total response he got were exceedingly overwhelming.
Soon after, Axel started a company he called iFix, and operated it from his dorm room in the university. The store now has at least 8 locations, and employs over 85 people.
iFix has also started manufacturing mobile phone accessories, which he exports to many countries across Africa.
His total startup capital was $0, except for the money he paid for the local newspaper ad. He is also one of the youngest millionaires in Africa.

Dont follow your passion, Follow your curiosity

don't follow your passion

" Following your passion" is a very popular subject that is being taught to us by successful men and women, and read in quotes and written about in millions of books, but what if I told you that your concept of following your passion has always been wrong.

"'follow your passion' is easily the worst advice you could ever give or get,"- Mark Cuban.

Now don't get me wrong, I am not telling you that following your passion is impossible or what your mentors or successful people have been teaching you are complete rubbish, it's just most times we don't dig deeper to understand what they are really talking about.

Now these are some reasons why following your passion won't work out for you based on how you feel about it.

1. Passion is all you need.

Now this is one misconception we all get about following our passion, we believe that because we are about following our passions all other things will fall into place for us and this is not true.

If starting a business or being an entrepreneur is your passion, you have to start thinking about getting the major skills that are necessary for being an entrepreneur and you may not like all of them. Its the same for someone that starts a career based on the person's passion in any field. Every field is made up of different skills and challenges that are necessary to excel in them, and you may not like all the skills or be able to cope with all the challenges you will be required to face in these fields.

2 . Your passion aren't worth a nickel.

This is actually a quote from billionaire Mark Cuban, and its one I totally agree with. If we carry a pen and paper and write down problems we can solve with our passion, or opportunities we can create for ourselves with our passion, almost all of us will come up with a blank sheet, and when there are no problems to solve or opportunities to be created, there is no room for making money.

Also remember i am writing this post based on the concept of you creating a business and becoming financially independent and not based on pursuing a job career like in a field like sports where you can probably make billions too but you won't have that freedom that comes with owing your own business.

3. The things we like can change over time.

There is a high probability that you won't still enjoy the things you do now in the next 5 to 7 years. What we are interested in over a particular period of time can change, if we look back to things we enjoyed about 5 years ago we'll see they are totally different from what we enjoy now. If that was the case I would have created a business or career off playing video games.

I have given you three reasons why following your passion is a very crappy idea, if you agree with me, you can continue reading this post to find out what you should actually follow to have that fulfillment you have always been looking for, if not you can go and check out another site that tells you to follow your passion without actually explaining how.

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.” - Albert Einstein,

You don't need to follow your passion to find fulfillment in life and in your business. The feeling you get from following your passion is nice, its like having a one night stand, but if you can leave your passion for once and start following that thing you know you spend most of your time on and you are really curious about, you will end up building your passion from there.

If we study most of the successful entrepreneurs we see in the world today we will find out that most of them had no idea what they were doing when they started, they just saw a business opportunity or gap in the market and followed it up. Most times a business opportunity means trying out something new.

So to follow up on the reasons I gave about why following your passion is a bad idea, I will be giving you some things you should do to find your passion in whatever you are doing now or how to just go and find your passion.

"Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you"- Oprah Winfrey.

1. Don't become complacent.

Most of us are still looking for our passion even though we have started successful businesses. When we stop learning new things or stop meeting new challenges we start getting bored.

Most of us fear change or new challenges. The truth is its those challenges we learn from and those things we learn after we already know all that makes our life interesting and also give our life meaning. From now,try to explore and think of new ways to expand your business, and keep learning new skills to improve your business. In essence, CHALLENGE YOURSELF.

2. What do you spend your free time on.

You can tell what a person really enjoys from what they spend their free time on. Even though we spend time on video games and social media and a lot of junk. During our spare time we still spend on things that matter too. It's now left for us to know those things we spend our time on and know how we can transform them into business opportunities.

3. What are You curious about.

"Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you" -Oprah Winfrey

Human beings are curious organism. Being a human is more than just having the body of one. Taking away curiosity from us is like taking away humanity. Curiosity is like a fling and may cause us to be impulsive. They can also be temporary or cause us to be more enduring. Pursuing our curiosities can give us a life purpose and also give us a sense of fulfillment.

4. Do what successful people DO and not what they say.

When it comes to following your passion, I believe you should really get to know about that successful person and learn how they started before you practice what they preach. Most successful people start businesses based on nothing related to the degree's they got in school, neither did they start businesses based on their hobbies and interests at that particular point in time.

"You've got to find what you love, don't settle" - Steve Jobs.

This quote is from one of the greatest men to ever walk this planet, Steve Jobs. This man got fascinated with computers when he was interested in Buddhism, meditation and mysticism. But when he saw the opportunity in computers, he grabbed the opportunity and cultivated his passion from there.

To conclude, Just follow those things You are curious about, when you learn new things and get good at them, you start becoming passionate about them. You feel good about yourself when you know someone can pay you money for that particular thing you know you are very good at, and that is the beginning of cultivating passion. Start giving your curiosity attention. Most times attention and passion mean the same things.

17 Great Books every Entrepreneur should read more than ten times

You surely know it’s going to be difficult for you to become successful without books, emphasis on 'Difficult', I didn't say impossible I just said difficult. Hard work and perseverance are good but you don't have to persevere and work your ass off to be successful, and only talent isn't going to get you to where you want to be.

That is why I have learnt the importance of reading books and have come to love them. From books my mentors and other great men and women who have walked this planet can tell me the best and most effective way to pursue my dreams without making much mistakes.

I am a real book-nerd meaning I have read 100 of books, right now I read up to 3-4 books every month and I know that is kind of small but this is because I am a really busy person, and no matter how busy I am in a day I can hardly stay a whole day without opening a book.

HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE BY DALE CARNEGIE.

7. HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE BY DALE CARNEGIE.

This book is a classic, and I really enjoyed it. It's one book I didn't want to read at first when I saw the date it was originally published-1937, and I thought most of the principles that would be taught in the book were probably outdated. But this book is worth every second you put into reading to it, because it based on the principles involved in being likable, persuasive, and influential leader.

This is another great read. This was the first book that opened my mind and made me start dreaming about being an entrepreneur. In this book you will learn the difference between assets and liabilities. You will also learn reasons why you should get assets instead of liabilities.

In this book, Robert Kiyosaki will change the way you think about money, with perspectives that often contradicts conventional wisdom. Every entrepreneur needs to learn how to sell, and what better way is there than reading a book written by the World's Guinness book of Record - Greatest Sales Man. This books was written with love and contains almost every method Joe Girard uses to sell his cars to customers.

Joe Girard shares the system of salesmanship that has made him a renowned success in his field. He didn't have a degree from any great schools or get any certificate from any sales training agencies but he learned by being in the trenches everyday that nothing replaces old-fashioned salesmanship. I believe this book has helped millions of people change the way they think about sales, and it can also help you too.

10. WHO MOVED MY CHEESE BY DOCTOR SPENCER JOHNSON.

This awesome book tells a story that has a hidden meaning about why we should all deal with unexpected change and keep moving in life. This book was distributed to the employees by the managers in the pharmaceutical company I work in, and that was how I came in contact with the book.

This books tells the amusing and enlightening story of four characters who live in a maze and looks for cheese to nourish their selves. Cheese in this story is a metaphor for anything you want to have in this life, while the maze is basically life. In the story the characters deal with unexpected changes and eventually one of them accepts the change and his life gets better.

AWAKE THE GIANT WITHIN BY TONY ROBBINS.

11. AWAKE THE GIANT WITHIN BY TONY ROBBINS.

This is book that I believe should be forced into the hands of everyone in the world. If everyone could read this book for 15 minutes every day then the world will surely be a better place. This book teaches you how to be happy and live your life to the fullest.

Anthony Robbins teaches you how to take control of your life, shows you his most effective strategies and techniques for mastering your emotions, your body, your relationships, your finances and almost every aspect of your life.

AS A MAN THINKETH BY JAMES ALLEN.

12. AS A MAN THINKETH BY JAMES ALLEN.

I knew I would enjoy this book before I even picked it up to read because I always enjoy books about the power of thoughts. In this book James Allen shows us that the mind guides our footsteps as we progress along the pathway of life.

He shows us how we can live a good life by having a pure mind, and how having a defiled thought or impurity in our thought can lead to a defiled life, a defiled body and sickness, and also affect the environment in which we live in.

13. I WILL TEACH YOU TO BE RICH BY RAMIT SETHI.

The name and cover of this book are really attractive, but don't read this book expecting to find some fast way or simple way to make billions off whatever currency your country uses because you will be really disappointed. In this book, Ben Carson carries us on a journey of how he made some successful surgeries that made headlines round the world. My favorite was the separation of the Siamese twins joined at the back of the head.

Ben Carson also explains the role his hardworking mother played in his success. To cut the story short, Ben Carson's story inspires us all to know we can be successful even with humble beginnings.

MARKETING SECRETS BY PETER SPALTON.

15. MARKETING SECRETS BY PETER SPALTON.

I forced myself to pick up this book at first because I knew the importance of knowing about marketing before you can start your business. You may have enough money to hire a professional marketing team, but it will be more difficult to control them if you don't know the basics of marketing. Marketing is also one of the skills an entrepreneur requires in running a successful business.

In this book Peter covered all the basics involved in marketing a business or brand like how to target you market for a particular niche or market and why you should do that, and also how you should use memorable publicity to build market interests.

This book contains inspirational success stories ranging from retail and gaming to social media and the restaurant business. How They Started relives the humble beginnings of companies such as Coca-Cola and Disney, Google and Twitter and many more. The stories were gotten through personal interviews with key sources including founders, investors and past employees.

MY BIG IDEA: 30 SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURS REVEAL HOW THEY FOUND INSPIRATION BY RACHEL BRIDGE.

17. MY BIG IDEA: 30 SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURS REVEAL HOW THEY FOUND INSPIRATION BY RACHEL BRIDGE.

This book is similar to HOW THEY STARTED by DAVID LESTER, but I prefer this one because Rachel Bridge is a very good story writer.  In this book Rachel goes deep to write what really inspired the owners of this companies to start these companies in the first place, and she also writes the personal philosophy of each of the entrepreneurs in this book.

This book explains how 30 successful entrepreneurs turned their dreams into reality. They tell how they decided to do what they do, how they got capital and how they went about it. It also reveals their doubts, mistakes, and frustrations encountered along the way. It explains how these individuals overcame their difficulties and turned a dream into a commercially viable reality.

Meet the Liberian refugee who built a business empire -Meet Fomba Trawally

Fomba Trawally’s story is another great one, it’s so amazing how this Liberian refugee started a business with a very little amount and built it into an empire. This is how he did it.
Fomba Trawally was born in 1971 to poor parents in Liberia. Growing up, he attended the Voinjama Public School in 1975 and subsequently the Kakata Islamic Training School in 1981. His mother had no formal education and sold peppers and aubergines in order to feed her children. His mother later died in the year 1980 and this was when her eldest son, Mr. Trawally, started his entrepreneurial journey with selling shower slippers in a wheelbarrow.
Then the civil war broke out in 1989, and Mr. Trawally and his family had to flee to Gambia as refugees. At the end of 1991 he returned home and - with $25 (£16) that he had saved and $120 that he got from a Malian friend - he started his business, Kumba Beindu and Sons. The company imports plastic products, shoes and cosmetics from countries such as China, the United States, Turkey and neighboring Ivory Coast. In Liberia it supplies hundreds of smaller businesses in Monrovia, the capital, and several provincial towns. With tens of employees, Kumba Beindu and Sons, main site is located at Monrovia's Waterside Market, and residents flock to it in search of items normally available only at his place.
Now his import company is one of the biggest in Liberia. “It's very easy to make business in Liberia. You'll see many Liberians that are doing business now. In just one year's time we were able to grow up to $3,000… and now we have businesses all around the country. I was not expecting that at all. I was not dreaming about it. My dream was only to get $500 in my life “he told BBC's series African Dream.
"So I was not thinking that I'm gonna talk about $1,000, I'm gonna talk about $10,000 and end up with $1m… If I could get $500, then I could go to a Nigerian market to buy goods from Nigeria," he said.
And he wants to lead by example. His next dream is to move into manufacturing.
"My country now needs to also export products. You're not gonna be buying these clothes again in China, you're gonna be buying them right here, Liberian-made."
"You can learn accounting in a school and get your PhD in accounting but the practical idea, if you don't have it, it will be difficult to go through."
He believes that if you want to make your money grow, you have to learn to save it too. He told BBC Africa that he does not spend his money unnecessarily and lives a very frugal life. According to him, he has even worn the same pair of jeans for about eight years.
Mr Trawally stresses that young entrepreneurs do not always need a lot of capital to start with.
"It doesn't cost you $1m to start a business," he said.
"My advice to my other friends around the world, including Liberia, is that you should be encouraged and believe that you can do everything with $100 or $500. My mother started with five or 10 US cents which is nothing today."
African Dream is broadcast on the BBC Network Africa programme every Monday morning.
Every week, a successful business man or woman will tell their story about how they started and what others could learn from them.

Fomba Trawally’s story is really inspirational. Poor beginning don’t mean you will be poor for life. You can actually change your life by changing your mode of thinking and working really hard. People only want to read about the success stories of those that started from nothing and not those that were born with a silver spoon in their mouths.
